How Long Could Flood Damage Tear Your House Apart?

All good things would inevitably come to an end.

And our houses are no exception to this. Sure, regular cleaning and preventive maintenance like cleaning out gutters, repairing windows and replacing roof shingles could prolong the lives of our houses, but have we ever given a thought on what exactly would happen to our houses by leaving it alone while maximizing the use of it?

Vulnerable to the ravages of time and weather, not all houses that are abandoned have a definite lifespan. It depends on several factors which includes the quality of your home's construction, the type of climate you live in, the shape your house is in and the materials your house is made of.

However, in Alan Weisman’s work, The World without Us, he described the possible process that a neglected house would undergo before it would self destruct. It turns out on the study that water is the home’s foremost enemy.

Quite ironic isn’t it? In the same way that water fuels our existence, there is a chance that water would also cause our extinction.

To be specific, it is really flood damage that could greatly contribute on the deterioration of our house. Even if the water would not penetrate the household the flood outside it may leave the exterior of the house soiled with water and once dried, the materials used may either be feeble or too brittle already, reacting to flood water.

Remember that those exteriors are the foundation of our houses, thus if they will collapse then the house needs to be rebuilt again and not merely renovated. Roof leaks that induce flood damage are also quite dangerous.

If water was able to penetrate your roof then your roof may be all damaged already and may cause impending flood damage. The roof is held together by a series of trusses, and triangular-shaped structures to which your roof is nailed. If you simply continuously remedy roof leaks with a sealant and not appropriate time to check their interior, then the roof might not take it anymore and fly away.

This would often happen in the heat of a heavy storm.

And of course, if your roof is already out of sight then there is a grave chance that your house would no longer protect you from the storm and would be exposed to flood damage! Water would build-up everywhere, that you will have a hard time knowing which place you should start!

Your furniture and appliances would all be soiled and destroyed too. As we all know, there are a number of appliances that can no longer be usable once subjected to flood damage. So you see, losing your roof creates a domino effect.

Be wary too of your home’s gutters especially when it is already starting to attract leaves and debris that is now a hindrance for the water flow and allow water to spill back to your roof causing it to rot and again the same flood damage problem shall begin.

All these and more, if overlooked may result to an unexpected demise of your home. Good thing though that there are no governing laws on house abuse, because if so many of us would be in prison already!

However the punishment takes its toll on us in itself. If we are to abuse our homes, then we would be the one at the losing end because we no longer have homes to lay our tired heads in.
